Make sure you set up "alerts" on the top non-profit job board. Deepsweep.com is one of the best and will notify you on a regular basis of any jobs in your town or city matching your specific interests. The site is heavily focused on California and Los Angeles in particular.

Other good sources are Execsearches and Indeed.

Make sure your Linkedin profile is up-to-date as well so that you can import that data when you are registering for these services.

Non-profits employ many more people than we think

"Nonprofits generate more jobs in New Mexico than such important employment sectors as the oil and gas industry, construction, manufacturing and financial activities, according to a report based on 2012 labor data by the state Department of Workforce Solutions."

Do your homework!

Hardly a day goes bye in these tough times without a half dozen resumes landing in my in-box full of typos and glaring signs of a clear lack of effort in the research undertaken by the sender.

Among the countless flaws I encounter are the following clangers that you should try to avoid at all costs:
Cover letters addressed to someone else; copied and pasted cover letters that are applicable to a specific job posted on another web site; cover letters that tell me nothing about the writer, and are therefor immediately cast into the eternal darkness of my trash file; cover letters with spelling mistakes - uh, have you heard about spell-checkers? The list goes on and on.

Make sure you do your homework when you are sending out a resume and cover letter: personalize it; spell-check it; provide a brief summary of your experience and recent employers in the cover letter; make sure it is relevant to the search firm or employer you are contacting. You do not want to stand out for lack of preparation or effort: do your homework and make your letter relevant to the vacancy and reader.
