Hardly a day goes bye in these tough times without a half dozen resumes landing in my in-box full of typos and glaring signs of a clear lack of effort in the research undertaken by the sender.
Among the countless flaws I encounter are the following clangers that you should try to avoid at all costs:
Cover letters addressed to someone else; copied and pasted cover letters that are applicable to a specific job posted on another web site; cover letters that tell me nothing about the writer, and are therefor immediately cast into the eternal darkness of my trash file; cover letters with spelling mistakes - uh, have you heard about spell-checkers? The list goes on and on.
Make sure you do your homework when you are sending out a resume and cover letter: personalize it; spell-check it; provide a brief summary of your experience and recent employers in the cover letter; make sure it is relevant to the search firm or employer you are contacting. You do not want to stand out for lack of preparation or effort: do your homework and make your letter relevant to the vacancy and reader.
